Echinococcosis in the United States

  • A European strain of Echinococcus multilocularis, a parasitic worm that can cause serious liver disease, has been found in the United States.
  • Two cases of the disease were reported in Vermont patients with no history of travel outside the country.
  • The authors of the study sequenced the parasite’s DNA and found that it matched a European strain.
  • They also found that the parasite was present in red foxes in Virginia.
  • This suggests that the parasite may be establishing itself in the United States.
  • The authors warn that doctors should be aware of this new strain, as it is more virulent than the strains previously found in the United States.

The findings of this study are concerning because Echinococcus multilocularis is a serious disease that can be fatal if not treated promptly. The disease is caused by the parasite’s larvae, which can form cysts in the liver. These cysts can grow large and damage the liver, leading to liver failure.

The study authors recommend that doctors be aware of the possibility of Echinococcus multilocularis infection in patients with unexplained liver disease, especially those who have had contact with wild animals, such as foxes.

Please talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about Echinococcus multilocularis infection.

The Foundation is in the early stages of a study into its prevalence
